Preface
I never thought that I would write about the art of management and share my views regarding its perception versus reality. However, closely monitoring the management styles of different bosses and leaders in multiple organizations taught me a lot that I witnessed as a mere employee sometimes, and sometimes otherwise. After I graduated from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi in 2013, I was admitted to Karachi University Business School (KUBS) as an M.Phil student of Marketing. Because of my previous experience of being a Teaching Assistant of Socio-Economic and Political Philosophy of Islam at IBA, under the guidance of Dr. Tufail Qureshi, I was given a chance at KUBS to teach a course to the students of BBA.
The role of a teacher for me was far different from the conventional teaching methodologies that I have usually experienced in my academic career other than a few teachers who were way too different. The journey that I embarked on as a teacher was one of the most important and beautiful experiences of my life, where I got a chance to deal with and control the strength of almost 100 different individuals belonging to different socio-economic classes, having different norms and values. Managing this human resource was the most beautiful, yet most lethal task that I had to go through. The standardization of my behavior with almost every individual would have not catered to the specific needs of the individuals who required extra care and attention. As an example, I would narrate a simple scenario.

ART OF
MANAGEMENT
PERCEPTION OR REALITY?
A student, who was way too depressed came to me and spoke about the lack of communication skills that was very common among many other students. She was way too reluctant to speak to the class and was afraid to give her presentation. I listened to her so that she could speak her heart out and that made her feel relaxed. Gradually, I started asking her questions in English and appreciating her before the class. The fact of the matter was that it worked more than I thought it would. Not only was she able to deliver a presentation before the end of her semester, but, she was able to ace it completely as the whole class applauded her efforts.
………………………………………………………………………
That day I figured out that many things can easily be solved by showering positive compliments and by helping people boost their confidence.
I remember how often I used to address the class that every human wants to be loved and everyone craves attention. The inability of our society to respect the behavioral need of being loved is reflected in various forms. You might see someone way too aggressive for reasons unknown to you, and if you even want to know, you may get an idea that the person himself is unclear about the reasons for being aggressive. The usual scenario is, that when you go out there as a leader even if you hold no rank or designation and show your concern for the individuals through your actions, they usually respond, if not immediately, then for sure gradually.
Let’s analyze another story:
I remember, there was a student of BBA, who was way too strange in his behavior. He was not welcoming and receptive towards my teaching methodology of showering positive compliments to my students. Gradually, I started seeing positive behavior in him. His manners of greetings changed and I started seeing him as my favorite student. Students do respond when they are given love and this goes out for most of the people out there.
……………………………………………………
However, sometimes with love, you need to assert justice as well by maintaining a fair system within the organization.
I remember once I had a very different experience with one of my students. I was way too young when I started teaching. I was conducting an introductory session when I came across a student who had passed a derogatory comment in a loud tone, while I was engaged in listening to the introduction of another student. I went straight to him, made him stand and until he felt sorry for his attitude I kept questioning him.
