Dedication

For my sister—

the one who saw the light in me

long before I ever dared to name it.

Your belief held me steady through every storm.

You’ve always been my quiet strength,

my compass home.

For Maha,

whose gentle guidance helped untangle

what I could never say out loud.

You didn’t just hear me—

you helped me hear myself.

Because of you, I finally chose to be seen.

For my son,

my little boy,

may you grow up watching a mother

who chose to be whole,

so you never have to shrink

to be loved.

And for every girl

who carries the weight of silence,

for every soul

still finding the language

to name their pain—

this memoir is not a story of triumph,

but of becoming.

Of surviving.

Of remembering who you are.

Before you begin, I want you to know something:

I didn’t write this book to be understood.

I wrote it so I won’t forget.

There was once a girl who learned early that silence was safer than being misunderstood. That being good meant being invisible. That love often arrived with conditions, even when it looked abundant.

I don’t remember the exact moment I changed. I only remember that childhood became a blur of contradictions, joy wrapped in caution, affection tangled with duty, and rooms that still smell of fear.

This story doesn’t begin with pain, but it doesn’t begin with peace either.

It begins in between, in the space where love and grief lived in the same breath. In the eyes of a child who was always trying to be enough. In the warmth of a kitchen. In the flicker of a bulb. In the silence that tried to swallow me whole.

I wrote this book not to explain myself, but to gather the fragments I’ve spent years hiding. These pages are for her.

For every version of her that survived without applause.

For every memory that refused to stay buried.

For every truth I was too afraid to say until now.

You don’t need to understand everything.

You just need to listen.

Chapter 00:
The Truth

There are some truths that never leave the body.

They stay lodged in your chest, wrapped around your ribs, tucked beneath your skin. And even when the world moves on, even when your life looks fine, they keep humming beneath the surface… asking to be seen.

This isn’t just a story. It’s an excavation.

Of silence.

Of shame.

Of identity.

Of survival that looked like perfection but felt like drowning.

I was born with two stories stitched into my spine: one of privilege, and one of pain. On paper, I was blessed. I wore gold. I smiled in photographs. I had enough of what the world calls comfort. But beneath the glitter, there was a slow, unspoken breaking.

This book began as a question: What happens when a child stops feeling safe?

And it grew into something else:

What happens when that child grows up and refuses to stay silent?

You won’t find a neat narrative here. Trauma isn’t linear. Healing isn’t a climax. This is a mosaic of moments, fragments of a life shaped by culture, silence, spirituality, and the sacred mess of becoming.

I wrote it for anyone who has ever disappeared in a room full of people. For anyone who has ever asked, quietly, “Is it okay to be this soft?” For anyone who has ever survived by becoming what the world needed—and is now learning how to become who they truly are.

This is not a book about triumph.

It’s a book about truth.

And sometimes, that is more than enough.

Chapter 01:
The Echo of Absence

Before I knew anything about grief, I knew the sound of laughter echoing off tiled floors. I knew the sizzle of onions in hot oil, the way my mother’s dupatta always smelled faintly of rose water and cardamom. I knew how sunlight spilled across our veranda at noon, how my siblings and I raced to catch its warmth like it was a game only we understood.

Our home was alive—full of overlapping voices, clanging dishes, shared secrets under blanket forts, and arguments that always ended with someone handing someone else a slice of mango. There was chaos, yes—but it was a soft chaos, the kind that wraps around you like an old quilt.

In those early years, I felt safe.

Even the scolding had rhythm to it. Even the silence had warmth.

I didn’t know yet that love could leave without leaving, or that joy could have an expiration date. I only knew the hum of my mother’s voice as she recited verses in the kitchen, and the way our hands overlapped when reaching for the last piece of roti. I believed that this—this ordinary, cluttered, colorful life—was the whole world.

But slowly, the sounds changed.

***

There are women who suffer in silence, who bury their pain behind locked doors, who swallow their grief to keep the world steady for their children. My mother was not one of them.

She howled.

She cried with her entire body, with her voice thrown across the room like glass breaking. She didn’t hide her pain. She made sure it was known. She made sure we knew. Her grief wasn’t a private thing, wrapped neatly in a box beneath her bed. It lived with us, breathed with us, dined with us. Her sorrow moved like a current through our home, pulling everything into its undertow.

She didn’t speak to us as children. She spoke to us as the only witnesses of her life, as if we were old enough to hold all the weight she carried. We knew everything: what had gone wrong in her marriage, how she was left alone to carry the burden of parenthood, how her dreams had shriveled beneath the pressure of survival. Her sorrows became the dominant language of our household. Her pain was the loudest sound.

There was no room for our own.

I never learned how to cry for myself. I only knew how to brace myself for hers. I grew up watching her spill over, and the idea of adding my own sadness to her ocean felt like cruelty. How could I, a child, offer her another storm when she was already drowning? So I built a fortress. Not made of stone or steel, but silence. I saved my feelings like rationed bread—just enough to survive, never enough to be full.
