Statistics as an Author

I have been writing for a few years now, but have never attempted to get any of my work published. I do try to write short stories and plays as well, but have always been most interested in poetry - both reading and writing.
I'm a doctor by profession, and do think that I have been fortunate enough to see all kinds of people, and in rather unfortunate circumstances. All that is experience I hope I can aptly incorporate into my writing.
